Dave Duncan leaves us
David Duncan, age 66, of Fayetteville, N.C., died Thursday,
December 11, 2008. Dr. Duncan, a graduate of the University of
Kansas, was a physician, scholar, veteran, and a loving father
and husband. Dr. Duncan is survived by his wife, Jane H. Duncan,
of the home, three children, and three grandchildren.
The preceding was published in the Kansas City Star on
12/14/2008.
We received the following message from
John Anderson on January 13th...
"I have spoken to Janie a couple of times and thought I
would pass along a brief summary of a sad story about one of my
favorite classmates.
"Dave was in
Desert Storm 18 years ago where he contracted Hepatitus
C, which appears to be the underlying culprit. It has a 20 year
"watch period." In early November, he started feeling poorly.
Getting worse, right after
Thanksgiving he went to the doctor, who referred him to a
gastroenterologist who then did a CT Scan. The doctor called
Janie with the results and told her that Dave had a huge mass in
his liver and that there was nothing they could do. This was
around the first of December. Dave died on Dec. 11.
"This was all unexpected and happened with lightening speed.
Unbelievable, and just when Dave was getting his feet back on
the ground. He had regained his medical license and was a
radiologist at the VA hospital in
Fayetteville, NC.
"Janie is still in shock, but doing ok. She still has her
sense of humor
and giddy laugh. Sometime later in the year she plans to move
back to Wichita." |

Toni Kross Levine passes away
Monday, Oct. 27. We have just learned this morning of the
passing of our classmate Toni Cross Levine some time early in
September, due to a stroke. Although a Kansas City resident, for
some reason, there was no obituary in the Kansas City Star at
the time. If any of you know more details about Toni, we would
appreciate hearing
from you. Toni had emailed us in early August that she had
been ill and was getting better.

hometown of Albuquerque, New Mexico, on September 18th where she
had lived since 1961. The writeup from

Bill Crow no longer with us

Dave Moak Passes Away
The quarterback of the Shawnee-Mission East football team when
we were seniors has left us. A kind and gentle soul and who was
a friend to all, was loved by pretty much anyone who knew him,
had suffered from cancer and passed away on August 12. The
Kansas City Star obituary was woefully brief and one would hope
that additional words about Dave's life will somehow appear
there. We last saw Dave when he attended our 40th Anniversary
Reunion in 2000. Bless you, sir. You will be sorely missed by us
all.

Kansas City Star on August 27th.

Dave Pomeroy
is producing a KC Athletics TV Documentary.
In their brief residency in Kansas City, the A's left a
colorful mark on the region and on major league baseball. Dave
Pomeroy, our classmate and a lifelong A's fan and baseball buff,
has partnered with co-producer Linda Haskins to produce
Lucky 13:
Kansas City Athletics Baseball 1955-1967. Would
you like to help out this wonderful project.

Girls, Girls, Girls! But
WHO Are They?

This wonderful photo taken at a Leawood Country Club Hawaiian Night in
the mid-1950s shows many of our lovely Hula Girls (i.e., classmates). We
can identify Sandy Garner and Sharon Lee Allen---but who are the others?

JUDY DANEKE
ABERNATHY
AND HER WONDERFUL ANIMALS...
As your erstwhile website editor
and news-getter-outer these past two years or so, I am chagrinned to say
that I was not aware of the fine work being done by Judy Abernathy
on her farm down in Harrisonville, Mo. She spends her life lovingly
caring for so many different domestic pets who come to her for a variety
of reasons that it would be hard to describe it here. I want everyone in
our class to know about this...especially since I don't know a one of
you who isn't a real animal lover! Judy richly deserves our moral
support...but not only that, perhaps some donations---a few bucks, a big
bag or two of pet food, you name it.
First, go find out about her wonderful work by checking her website at:
http://www.companionanimals.siteblazer.net/
Judy Abernathy
PO Box 297
Harrisonville, MO 64701
Phone: 816-862-6136
...and then, contact her. It would be wonderful if we all could help in
this very, very worthwhile project...which, to Judy, is lifelong!
What's Dave Bitters Do In His Spare Time?
 |
Not only were we delighted to see Dave
Bitters at Ford and Carolyn Nelson's recent Patio Party, but in
chatting with Dave we learned he has a very unusual and colorful
sort of hobby: restoring oldtime radios. Click on the links at left
and get a gander at some of his work.
Wow...do these bring back memories!! |
Interesting Leawood Country Club Photos
| |
Steve Dudley dug up some rather neat
photos. One of them (below) is from a circa 1956 party at the
Leawood Country Club...and two others are home room photos from
Indian Hills Junior High. We need your help identifying everyone in
the home room photos. Some of the people are easily identified, many
are not. Can you help? E-Mail us. |
| Obviously upset he didn't win the
Beeg Prize, Chuck Mayer peeks between winners Louise
Waterman and Bob Cook at 1954 Leawood CC Luau. Click on
photo to see big one. |

Note: Russ and Dorothy May report
that Louise Waterman is not only alive and well, but is now a rather
well known local artist. How neat. |

Huge Success. Thanks!

Judy Daneke Abernathy recommends that everyone visit this wonderful site

local cause. [I assume that means ALL of us,
right? RN] This is a place where you can immediately assist
specific little creatures who direly need help right away.

bowled over by it. Randy], but Russ May has done it again! He
has put online the entire edition of our Senior year SME School

Original order This is in order of name.

lived on your same street! Russ, all we can say
is: we luv ya'!
