IN MEMORIAM
CARL ISON
1909-2010

The Shawnee Mission East High School Class of 1960 is sad to
report the passing on June 30th of our principal, the very
first principal of our school. Our 50th Anniversary Reunion
is dedicated to Mr. Ison as is the 50th Reunion Book which
will be released at the event on July 9-11. Mr. Ison's life
is contained in a
special writeup. The above photograph
was taken of Mr. Ison when he was vice principal at the
original Shawnee-Mission High School in 1957. This fair and
gentle man is remembered fondly by us all.

Our World
Traveller,
Jeff Ward
That's our classmate,
Jeff Ward, in the picture at left. He's with
some bigwig friends of his with the Travellers Century Club, an
international organization of people who love to travel and,
with that love, try to see as many countries they can. Jeff was
recently admitted to SILVER LEVEL of the TCC, his having visited
(it's true!) 150 countries! The only classmate we know who's
even come close to that is Dave Pomeroy who, we think, is now up
to just over 60. Very impressive, guys. |
 |
Dave Pomeroy
is producing a KC Athletics TV Documentary.
In their brief residency in Kansas City, the A's left a
colorful mark on the region and on major league baseball. Dave
Pomeroy, our classmate and a lifelong A's fan and baseball buff,
has partnered with co-producer Linda Haskins to produce
Lucky 13:
Kansas City Athletics Baseball 1955-1967. Would
you like to help out this wonderful project.

Jess Rose
We just received the sad news that S-M East's
renowned vocal music teacher, Jess Rose, passed away on
Monday, October 5th. If any of you have a photo or two of Mr.
Rose, please send same to us. We'd like to have one on our site.
Mr. Rose, by the way, attended SME's 50th anniversary
celebrations last year...including the big luncheon held by the
Classes of 1959, 1960, and 1961 at Homestead Country Club. His
vocal music department at East was nationally known---and he was
responsible for our school becoming the leading high school in
Kansas in this particular discipline. |
CHECK THIS...

This wonderful class
photo from Prairie School (1953-54) from our Sixth
Grade year is courtesy of Bill Doty, an old friend who left us before we
even got into high school. Would you care to send us your thoughts on who is
pictured here? Click for an enlarged view.
Email us
with your identifications.

We're pleased to
introduce you to the classy website offered by the S-M North Class

their site very helpful in locating them. |

Okay, Boys...
Don Ringstrom
just sent us what may be one of the earliest photos showing a lot
of our classmates together. Click the image at left to see a 1953

Girls, Girls, Girls! But
WHO Are They?

This wonderful photo taken at a Leawood Country Club Hawaiian Night in
the mid-1950s shows many of our lovely Hula Girls (i.e., classmates). We
can identify Sandy Garner and Sharon Lee Allen---but who are the others?
Click here to view a larger version of this photo to help you
see everyone better. By the way, that's Steve Dudley among the guys in
the background!
JUDY DANEKE
ABERNATHY
AND HER WONDERFUL ANIMALS---& she'd love your help...
As your erstwhile website editor
and news-getter-outer these past two years or so, I am chagrinned to say
that I was not aware of the fine work being done by Judy Abernathy
on her farm down in Harrisonville, Mo. She spends her life lovingly
caring for so many different domestic pets who come to her for a variety
of reasons that it would be hard to describe it here. I want everyone in
our class to know about this...especially since I don't know a one of
you who isn't a real animal lover! Judy richly deserves our moral
support...but not only that, perhaps some donations---a few bucks, a big
bag or two of pet food, you name it.

...and then, contact her. It would be wonderful if we all could help in
this very, very worthwhile project...which, to Judy, is lifelong!
What's Dave Bitters Do In His Spare Time?
 |
Not only were we delighted to see Dave
Bitters at Ford and Carolyn Nelson's recent Patio Party, but in
chatting with Dave we learned he has a very unusual and colorful
sort of hobby: restoring oldtime radios. Click on the links at left
and get a gander at some of his work.
Wow...do these bring back memories!! |
Interesting Leawood Country Club Photos
| |
Steve Dudley dug up some rather neat
photos. One of them (below) is from a circa 1956 party at the
Leawood Country Club...and two others are home room photos from
Indian Hills Junior High. We need your help identifying everyone in
the home room photos. Some of the people are easily identified, many
are not. Can you help? E-Mail us. |
| Obviously upset he didn't win the
Beeg Prize, Chuck Mayer peeks between winners Louise
Waterman and Bob Cook at 1954 Leawood CC Luau. Click on
photo to see big one. |

Note: Russ and Dorothy May report
that Louise Waterman is not only alive and well, but is now a rather
well known local artist. How neat. |

Well, here's Jeff Ward's answer (click!)
to who the people are in Steve's '57 IHJS class photo. Thanks Jeff!

Our 45th
Reunion Was A
Huge Success. Thanks!
With just under 100 of us
in attendance,
our 45th Reunion on the weekend of October 28-29 was a delightful
affair---reminiscent of some of our great social events of our early
years. We will soon have lots of photographs from the event here on our
site.
HOWARD AND
CORRINNE RUSSELL's MARCH 6TH ITALIAN DINNER A BIG SUCCESS.
Howard and Corrinne welcomed over 20 of us to their home on a fine
Sunday afternoon for another one of their great annual dinners. Once
again, we thank this fine couple for all they do for us classmates.
WILMA WHITE PASSES
AWAY.
OUR RENOWNED SENIOR ENGLISH TEACHER,
Mrs. White, recently passed away at the age of 90.
Click here for the story about her which
appeared in The Star.
Look at some history...

Nancy Hayes Callahan saved a very
historic school newspaper ("The Mission")
from the spring of 1958, when we were sophomores at the old
Shawnee-Mission HS. Click on the image above to see its most important
news story!
News About The Phil Cooper Memorial Research
Trust.
Phil's widow, Victory Cooper, has informed Phil Needham
about a special research foundation set up to further Phil's work in
childrens health care at East Tennessee State University in Johnson
City, Tenn. We as his classmates can help. Read more about it by
downloading the special Acrobat
file we've placed on the site.
Wow Dept.
To anyone who thinks that the times we live in today are pretty good...get
a load of this...

Judy Daneke Abernathy recommends that everyone visit this wonderful site
where those of us who love little animals can help a very wonderful
local cause. [I assume that means ALL of us,
right? RN] This is a place where you can immediately assist
specific little creatures who direly need help right away.
SM EAST FOOTBALL!
Take a look at how well (?) our Lancers have done on the gridiron
during our school's 45-year history?

HEY, CHECK THIS!!
We're getting so many
great photos coming in to us from lots of people that we now have a
special "Gallery" where you can see the latest additions. Click the
Apple above and go see 'em. Not only that, but pictures from the long
ago past are there, too---like Jim Mitchell's wonderful collection of
class photos from Prairie and Indian Hills.
THE 1959-60 S-M EAST
SCHOOL DIRECTORY
You're probably not going to
believe this [Well, I sure was incredibly
bowled over by it. Randy], but Russ May has done it again! He
has put online the entire edition of our Senior year SME School
Directory. Choose from two versions:
Original order This is in order of name.
Address order
This is in order of street and address. If you've ever wondered exactly
where all of your old friends used to live...well, this is it! The
"Address Order" version is a knockout. It shows every SME student who
lived on your same street! Russ, all we can say
is: we luv ya'!
WOULD YOU LIKE TO RECEIVE OUR E-MAIL BULLETINS? We are now
able to keep classmates up to date on our activities by sending out
special e-mail bulletins. For instance, whenever we have an event we
send regular announcements. We'd love to send these bulletins to
you...to get on the list, just
e-mail Randy Neil by clicking here.
Nice To See Ya' Dept.
